Enhance MSP for paddy: YSR

HYDERABAD:

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has urged the Centre to enhance the Minimum Support Price for Paddy to Rs.1, 000 a quintal on par with wheat.

In a representation to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Dr. Reddy said that in tune with the National Food Security Mission, a target was set to increase rice production by 10 million tonnes by the end of 2011-12 over and above the triennium average ending on March 31, 2008.

The average annual growth rate of rice in the last decade however had not been more than one per cent. On the other hand, the global tradable surplus of rice had come down substantially while the domestic consumption of rice in the recent past had been going up. Under these circumstances, government had to put in best possible efforts to achieve the goals set under National Food Security Mission, he said. The Chief Minister said increasing MSP of paddy would certainly be one of the major incentives for increasing the production of any crop. Though the CACP had recommended MSP of Rs.1, 000 per quintal for paddy for kharif 2008, Union government increased it to Rs.880 a quintal for Grade a variety and Rs.850 per quintal for common variety for the kharif 2008.
