Display of Jagan posters irks Chief Minister

Overzealous cadres fail to impress YSR

HYDERABAD:

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy snubbed overenthusiastic Congress workers who displayed the posters of his son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy at the public meeting addressed by AICC president Sonia Gandhi at Parade Grounds here on Saturday.

As he got up to address the gathering, some party workers sitting in front rows suddenly produced posters and started raising slogans in favour of Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy. Irked by their action, Dr. Reddy asked them to keep quiet.

At one stage, he snapped back at the slogan-shouting workers saying that they did not have any work.

The large turnout enthused the party leaders as the AICC chief addressed a public meeting in the city after several years.

The organisers were a bit worried as even one hour before commencement of the meeting, the sprawling ground was not even half full. But, as Ms. Gandhi’s arrival was announced, crowd started getting into the enclosures.

The entire city was decked with Congress flags and flexi sheets at every vantage point. Several aspirants for the party tickets used the occasion to put up cutouts, flexi boards and banners carrying the pictures of themselves along those of their leaders.

Performance by several cultural troupes engaged by the Congress entertained the audience.

Actors Giri Babu, Vijayachander (Karunamayudu fame) and character actor Sarathy were present.

TDP blamed

The Chief Minister blamed the TDP Government for closing down profit-making dairies in the State with a view to helping the Heritage Dairy, which is owned by the family members of the TDP president.

Dr. Reddy said that his government was committed to farmers’ welfare, and reopening of the Godavari Dairy was an example.

Dr. Reddy then left for the site allotted to the university and laid the foundation stone for its buildings. Later, he left for Hyderabad by helicopter.
