Will do my bit for airport, says YSR
Night landing and 24-hour operations are yet to be provided
YSR lists steps taken to develop city
New terminal a dream come true for locals
The Rs. 95-crore new integrated terminal building at the airport, which was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday, would be named after the first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
In his two-minute speech, and in response to the suggestion made by Visakhapatnam MP N. Janardhana Reddy earlier, Dr. Reddy said that he would initiate all steps, including writing a letter to the Prime Minister, and see that it was done at the earliest.
The Chief Minister said he had been taking a number of steps to develop Visakhapatnam into an international city. Many assurances had been fulfilled. Airport was one of them. But facilities for 24-hour operations and night landing were not yet provided. Efforts would be made to get those facilities, the Chief Minister said.
Mr. Janardana Reddy recalled how airports in big cities were named after the former Prime Ministers – Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. But there was no airport named after the first Prime Minister, he said, adding that he had spoken to the Minister for Civil Aviation .
The new terminal building constructed with state-of-art technology was a long-cherished dream of the people of the city. Spread over a sprawling area of nearly 22,000 square metres, it was built with glass and steel that would make it environmental-friendly. It had modern passenger facilities like central air-conditioning, inline X-ray baggage inspection system that was integrated with the baggage conveyor system, Flight Information Display System (FIDS), CCTV for surveillance, check-in counters etc. The peak hour capacity is 700 passengers.
Ministers – Konathala Ramakrishna and Botcha Satyanarayana; MPs – Botcha Jhansilakshmi and T. Subbarami Reddy; Mayor P. Janardana Rao, MLAs – T. Gurumurthy Reddy and Dronamraju Srinivas; AAI Executive Director G.K. Chowkkial, and Airport Director C. Pattabhi attended the meeting.
