‘Bio-Asia 2009’ was launched by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Sunday, with a call to biotech companies to promote quality products and dietary supplements to improve people’s health.
Dr. Reddy unveiled a plaque to inaugurate phase I of the biopharmaceutical and vaccine-manufacturing campus of Biological E Ltd set up with an investment of Rs.300 crore.
The 75-acre campus is located at SP Biotech Park.
The facility will manufacture vaccines/biopharmaceuticals which are crucial in preventing child diseases.
Vaccines/biopharmaceuticals Company proposes to invest Rs.250 crore on expansion in two-three years.
He presented the Genome Valley Excellence Award to Marc Van Montagu, founder-chairman, Institute of Plant Biotechnology for Developing Countries, Belgium, and Martin Mackay, President (Global Research & Development) Pfizer.
He unveiled the logo of the Knowledge and Innovation Park being set up by the University of Hyderabad (UOH) and Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation on a 200-acre campus.
Addressing the gathering, Sri Lankan Minister for Science and Technology Tissa Vitarana pointed out that biotech held tremendous potential to eliminate cancer and meet people’s food needs.
He called for proper application of biotech without endangering future generations and living beings. Sri Lanka was ready to join India’s efforts, as it would be mutually beneficial.
Earlier, British High Commissioner to India Sir Richard Stagg told presspersons that biotech and pharma sectors offered many long-term partnerships between the two countries.
One of the main challenges was to find high quality and low-cost drugs to benefit ageing population.
Manel Balcells, president, Bioregion of Catalonia, Spain, Major Industries Minister J. Geeta Reddy and Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad Seyed E Hasnain spoke.
Ms. Geeta Reddy launched the AP student wing of the All-India Biotech Association.
Vacant posts in TTD will be filled: YSR
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy has assured the TTD Employees Association that he would give necessary instructions to the authorities concerned to immediately fill all the 1,818 posts remaining vacant in different departments in the TTD. Dr. Reddy gave the assurance to a delegation of the association which met him in his chambers in Hyderabad. The Association leaders also requested the Chief Minister to consider elevating the Chief Accounts Officer to the post of the Financial Adviser and the Chief Accounts Officer (FA & CAO) if the incumbent is found to possess all the required qualifications.
State for extending ST status to Rajakas: YSR
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that the State government was committed to according Scheduled Tribe status to the Rajaka (washermen) community.
“The government has already sent a proposal to Centre and is awaiting the nod for according the ST status. We want the ST status to be given at the earliest,” he told ‘Rajaka Vijayabheri’ (State convention) of the community here on Sunday.
Dr. Reddy reiterated the party’s commitment to encourage more of the community leaders in politics.
The party would not hesitate to provide the right post to the deserving, he said, citing the elevation of Warangal legislator B. Saraiah as a member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
“Can you imagine any other party elevating a person from the Rajaka community to the board of the most popular hill shrine in the State?” he asked, promising to recognise its services.
He said a separate federation was taking up development programmes like setting up a mechanised laundry and dry-cleaning.
He mentioned how children belonging to BC communities were able to pursue higher education thanks to fee reimbursement. If a poor student wanted to join engineering or medicine course, all he had to do was to carry the caste certificate and join professional colleges without paying even a rupee. Backward Classes Welfare Minister Mukesh Goud, Anjan Kumar Yadav, MP, chairman of Washermen Cooperative Development Federation M. Anjaiah and others spoke.
YSR to tour Nellore district on Feb. 14
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will tour Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district on February 14. He will lay foundation stone for construction of building for Vikrama Simhapuri University at Amancharla village and participate in several inauguration programmes in Nellore city and other places.
