Satyam fraud will not impact Congress prospects: CM
Chief Minister Y. S.Rajasekhara Reddy has asserted that the fraud committed by former chairman of Satyam B. Ramalinga Raju will not impact the fortunes of the Congress party in the general elections.
In an interview to a Telugu television channel on Sunday, Dr. Reddy made light of reports in a section of the media that the Congress would pay a heavy price for the Satyam scam. Fielding questions, the Chief Minister ridiculed the Opposition parties charge that the Government had links with Maytas Infrastructure.
He said that apart from Maytas, contractors owing allegiance to the Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party were also undertaking works. “All the works are allotted as per the prescribed norms,” he said and clarified that there was no truth in the charge that Maytas was favoured for Machilipatnam Port works.
Dr. Reddy also took a dig at the TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, who he said had ensured that Mr. Ramalinga Raju shared the platform with US President Bill Clinton during his visit to Hyderabad.
He said the Congress party did not cast aspersion when Mr. Raju was seated next to the US President while Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata was seated among the audience.
To another issue, the Chief Minister said the Chief Secretary in his preliminary report had said that there were no irregularities in the functioning of Maytas. On Metro Rail Project, he said the Government was assessing and would take necessary action.
To another question, he said it was irresponsible statement to say that the Government had asked CID to file a case against Mr. Raju to protect him. “When Mr. Raju has confessed that he had committed fraud, Government ordered CID probe. Even though CID is investigating the case, parallel probe by SEBI and Registrar of Companies will continue,” he added.
‘YSR instigating Malas on classification issue’
Congress MP and organiser of ‘Malala Simha Garjana’ G.V. Harsha Kumar alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was instigating the Mala community on SC classification issue and directly supporting their brethren Madigas.
He also said that some Congress leaders were creating hurdles to disrupt ‘Simha Garjana’ slated for Sunday, but Malas will prove their unity and participate in large number despite hurdles. He declared that he would announce the names of leaders who created hurdles to ‘Garjana’ from the same dais on Sunday.
Addressing press conference here on Saturday along with former IAS officer B. Danam, former MLA Ayyaji Vema, former Mayor M.S. Chakravarti and Peetala Jayababu, Mr. Harsha kumar said that the developments from last 24 hours are painful as State Government was creating many problems to their public meeting.
He asked why the government allowed earlier two ‘Garjanas’ by Setti, Balija Gouda and Velama Garjanas to go off peacefully and number of Cabinet Ministers attended those meetings and only creating hurdles to their meeting.
