Chief Minister to lay foundation for flyover
A bronze statue of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao will be unveiled by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the Circuit House junction here on Friday morning.
Announcing this at a media conference here on Wednesday, convener of the statue committee S. Gopala Sastry said the statue committee was set up in January last year and the statue was ready by November last year. But the delay was on the part of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation in locating the site for installing the statue.
“The site chosen near the Tycoon hotel was not acceptable for us and now we have opted for the Circuit House junction. The statue, which cost Rs. 5 lakhs was sculpted by Ravi Shankar Patnaik in the presence of Sadguru K. Sivananda Murthy. We expect one lakh people for the unveiling function as Mr. Narasimha Rao is the pride of Telugus,” he said.
Visakhapatnam-II MLA S. Rangaraju said it would be a fitting tribute to the late P.V. Narasimha Rao, who proved his mettle by running the Government for a full term. Though everyone wanted to set up a statue for the legend, Dr. Gopala Sastry alone could succeed, he remarked.
Visakhapatnam-I legislator Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao said the unveiling of PV statue would be something the entire country should be proud of. For, it was Narasimha Rao who brought in economic reforms to put India on the path of progress, he stated. Former Rajya Sabha member Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad expressed happiness that the statue for the astute politician and multi-lingual scholar was being erected albeit after delay.
The biggest contribution of PV was presenting the great economist Manmohan Singh to the country by making the latter Finance Minister, he stated.
Gem of a man
Noted physician Nandivada Srinivasa Rao described PV as a gem of a man who brought in economic reforms in the country. Philanthropist Mattapalli Chalamaiah recalled the visit of PV as a legislator to his ancestral home in Samalkot nearly four decades ago.
